Broadway Songs Interpreted for New Audiences

Nashville-vocalist Jill Walsh offers authentic versions of good old Broadway songs on her two albums, the 17-track, one-hour studio disc, Two for the Road and her 20-track, 86-minute New York live concert Live Jazz on Broadway. The songs were written by Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Henry Mancini, Jimmy Dorsey, Kurt Weill and Dmitri Tiomkin, and originally featured in Broadway musicals from the 1930s to 1950s. As an extra curiosity, Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue" was added to the program. Walsh, who is also a singer-songwriter, by no means is a stranger within a core swing and vocal jazz style. Her voice is clear, well-articulated and straight, staying far from all-too-common wailings and other clichés. She delivers the meaning of the songs with strong passion and dedication, yet inevitable simplicity. She is accompanied by pianist Mike Pojhola in a tight collaboration. These straight-forward interpretations are an ample opportunity for pop and country music listeners who are looking to expand their listening habits into new territories and genres. Strongly recommended.
